Here we go again. Sydney’s most recent COVID lockdown could not have come at a worse time for families, kicking off right at the start of the school holidays. With sport, camps and holidays all cancelled, parents have been left scrambling for last minute ways to save their sanity. Not just to keep kids who are trapped indoors entertained and happy, but to ensure they’re not scared by all those big adults wearing masks.
Chris and Kate Stead, founders of Old Mate Media on the Northern Beaches, are such parents. With three kids aged under ten and a small business to operate, the chaos Sydney’s COVID lockdown creates on the home front is one they know all too well. So how could we help?
Free kids books for lockdown
During the 2020 lockdowns, we created two books to help families get through the emotional rollercoaster.
Ultimate At Home Activities for Kids – This book provides 14 themed-days of activities that can all be done from home. Everything you need is within, including instructions and links. This takes all the hard work out of having to think of what you’re going to do over the course of the day, and will ensure your kids have plenty to do. More info.
Superheroes Wear Masks – If you have a child that struggles with the idea of adults wearing masks, then this children’s picture book will help. It is designed to help kids understand why masks are sometimes necessary. It highlights, alongside beautiful art, jobs that require people to wear a mask every day even when there is no COVID. People they know. It empathises with kids while being educational, helping them understand why masks aren’t to be feared. More info.
