Today’s author interview with Roni Lambrecht is a bit different. Not our usual behind the scenes piece to share with your kids. This one is for the parents. Roni and her husband have a unique mission to help parents to be more mindful about the time they spend with their children, following the tragic loss of their only child. The idea is to help families live life to it's fullest so they don't have regrets down the line of things they did or didn't do. Her story will move and inspire you and we’re very grateful she has shared it with us.

Roni-Lambrecht-Pareting-at-your-bestTell us about your books?

I've written two books. The first one is Parenting at Your Best; Powerful Reflections and Straightforward Tips for Becoming a Mindful Parent and the companion book is A Parent's Guide for Journaling to Their Child; Simple Strategies for Writing Heartfelt Love Letters to Your Child. Both were written to help current parents to maintain mindful relationships with their children in this frenzied, disconnected world.

Why did you want to write these books?

I've loved to write since I was a child and always thought that I'd write a novel someday. I never anticipated writing non-fiction, especially nothing about parenting. But after living through the loss of our only child, our vision became clearer. And we wanted to help current parents do a better job of living with and raising their children without regrets.

What's been the best reaction from a reader so far?

A father wrote to me that he had not spoken to his son for 3 years. He invited his son back into his life and now has a relationship with his son again.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I've always loved helping others through volunteering and random acts of kindness, but I feel like losing Dalton was a message to do it in a much bigger way. The stories of families reuniting or parents who found one thing in the book that helped them communicate with their child on a different level has meant the most to me. Knowing I will never have the opportunity to make those small differences in Dalton's life again makes me feel like others are doing it with their kids because of him, and that is incredibly inspirational.

What's the most fun part of being an author?

I love speaking to parents and hanging out afterward hearing their stories. That, and it's really cool to know that I (along with many other folks) made this happen. I'm pretty proud of these books and the changes they've already created in so many peoples' lives. It makes me feel like we're making a difference!

What's your tip for parents to encourage reading?

What a great question! I could go on and on here… Dalton and I used to read together a lot. It began when he was still in my tummy and as a baby when I read to him. I always used voices and then as he got older, I'd ask him what he thought a certain character should sound like and then we'd each mimic the voices trying to "match" each other.

When he got into 1st grade, we began reading the Sammy Keyes series by Wendelin Van Draanen. We would try to solve the mysteries before we got to the conclusion of the books. We each had lots of ideas and would stop and discuss what we thought and then tease each other when one of us was wrong or right about the outcome. After we read each book, we listened to the book on CD from the library. We did the same thing with Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson where we read the book together and then went to see the movie, and several others after that. Because we read together and it was so fun, Dalton loved to read on his own too. We made going to the library a big deal. It was a "prize" when his chores at home were completed to go to the library; similar to earning a movie, or a toy, so it was always seen as a gift, not something he was required to do.

What's your favourite children's book of all time and why?

There are so many, but I think the one that stands out the most is The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. In fourth grade, my dad came a read the entire book to my class one afternoon and he cried most of the way through it. My class thought it was crazy that a dad would cry at a story, but they all understood by the time he was finished.

Life teaches us all many lessons; some more than others. Since losing their only child, Roni Lambrecht and her husband, John, have learned what it takes to forge ahead and find new purpose in life; helping others to improve their lives by enhancing their focus on what is actually significant; their children and the other people in their lives.

Their son, Dalton, was with them for 15 years and left for Heaven just after Christmas 2013 due to injuries from an ATV accident. John and Roni continue his legacy by counting their blessings for the short time they had him and practicing random acts of kindness in his memory each and every day.

Roni's three books are a tribute to Dalton, with anticipation that the stories and advice they offer will inspire others to excellence in their parenting. You can find out more about Roni by following her on Facebook and Instagram.
